Bat Night – Family Nature Walk @ square of benches south of Grenadier Restaurant
Aug 1 @ 12:30 am – 2:30 am

Learn all about bats with Dr. Brock Fenton, a true bat expert. We will learn about bat cultural representations, physical and behavioral adaptations, threats, and current research before hiking towards Grenadier Pond in search of bats.

Event will be cancelled in the event of rain.

Please bring a flashlight and your own lawn chair or blanket as the presentation portion of the evening will be outdoors on the lawn.

Great for all ages! No registration necessary.

(Grenadier Restaurant is located in the centre of the park off West Road)

High Park Walking Tours @ High Park
Aug 4 @ 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm

Sunday morning casual gatherings offering observations on the various elements of the park. Each walk has a different theme and is led by volunteer scientists,historians, and local naturalists who will help you to understand and explore High Park’s many characteristic features.

Walks may go on wooded trails, so please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Each session is scheduled for 1 1/2 hours. All ages are welcome; some walks may be more attractive to children. Dogs on leash only, please.

Free Sunday Walking Tours take place every first and third Sunday of the month, including holidays, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, but participants may come and go as needed. Meet at the benches, across the road from the south side of Grenadier Restaurant in the middle of High Park.

Aug 4: Caterpillars, Moths and Butterflies
Don Scallen, nature writer and science teacher, shares his enthusiasm for these fascinating creatures. Don brings examples from his personal collection and leads a walk to find others in the wild. This is a hands-on activity especially favoured by children.

Aug 18: Behind the Scenes at the Greenhouse
Members of the city gardening staff lead a tour through the greenhouse in the park, where many native species are grown for use in city parks and for sale to the public. A behind-the-scenes look at a facility most people don`t know exists.

Sep 1: Myths and Legends
Ghosts, murderers, mysteries, mayhem, spirits both evil and benign: High Park has been the setting for many stories from aboriginal times through the 20th century. Historians from Colborne Lodge weave the tales.

Sep 15: Who Goes to the Park
A view of the park through the eyes of award-winning artist and poet Warabe Aska. Visit the locations depicted in the book, learn the symbolism of the images. The artist has attended this event in the past and may do so again.

Oct 6: Hidden Treasures
Scavenger hunt fun for the whole family. Using the clues provided, test your powers of observation while touring viewing many of the park’s features. Great way to get kids involved in the landscape and structures of High Park.

Oct 20: Autumn Splendour
High Park’s “unofficial official” photographer, David Allen, leads photo buffs in a tour to capture images of the flowers, landscape or people in the park. Bring your camera and your questions, or just come to learn how to look through a photographer’s eyes.

Nov 3: Geological Wonders
The geography of High Park reflects its geological history. Glaciers and rivers and the sandy lake bottom have made the terrain what it is now.

Nov 17: Art of the Park
Artist and writer Tyler Clarke Burke explains the cultural and historical significance of public sculpture, architecture and design of the works of art which are scattered throughout the park.

Dec 1: High Park Through the Ages
Local history buff Dave Berendorff tells the story of the historical development of High Park as a recreational and cultural centre of the city.

Dec 15: Holiday Hike to Colborne Lodge
The Walking Tours Volunteer Committee and friends celebrate the season with a ramble past some familiar sites, winding up at Colborne Lodge for a warm drink.

Registration Day for Fall Programs at the Nature Centre

Registration for fall nature clubs at the High Park Nature Centre will open online on Wednesday, August 14th at 10:00 am.

Registration will be online only for the first day. Starting August 15th at 10:00 am we will begin accepting paper registration forms for any programs that still have space. Mailed in forms will also be processed at this time.

Fairies and Gnomes – Family Nature Walk @ High Park Nature Centre
