21st Annual Twilight Pumpkin Float in High Park
Sunday, October 30, 2016
4:00 – 6:00 pm
Cost: $2.50/pumpkin
Come carve a pumpkin and set it afloat with other ghoulish gourds! Meet at the wading pool in the northwest corner of High Park, just west of the main entrance to High Park at Bloor Street West and High Park Avenue.
Proceeds will send a class from a high needs school on a field trip to the High Park Nature Centre this fall!!

Activities take place on the patio at the Grenadier Restaurant in the centre of High Park.

Tree Lighting at 5 pm
Join us to learn about the ecological function of lichens and their uses in science, medicine, food, and space! There will be a presentation, field time, and lab time in the Nature Centre learning how to identify species in the park. Please bring a hand lens and a dissecting/stereo microscope if you have one. Hand lenses will also be provided. A key to the lichens in the region will also be provided and regional field guides will be available for purchase. The hike will be moderate in length and difficulty.
Come explore the amazing adaptations the animals in High Park have that help them survive during our harsh Canadian winters.

Learn about the plants and animals in High Park from the young naturalists of the High Park Eagles group! We will explore woodlands and black oak savannah habitats to learn fascinating facts and connect with the nature surrounding us.

Build skills, knowledge and learn how to identify the trees of Ontario while they sleep. This workshop will be led by Nousheen Ahmed and will begin indoors with a discussion of what to look for when identifying trees in winter– bark, twigs, buds and tree shape. You will then go on a guided hike on some of the lesser known nature trails of High Park to practice your new skills by identifying a variety of trees. This course is recommended for the beginner-to-intermediate tree observer. Dress in layers for both indoor and outdoor learning. The hike will be moderate in length and difficulty.
Burning the Black Oak Savannah: A History of the Spring Burn
Join us to explore the endangered Black Oak Savannah ecosystem in High Park. Learn indigenous peoples role in the creation and maintenance of the Savannah and how the city currently continues to restore it through yearly burns.

Have you ever wondered how trees reproduce? Join budding naturalists to explore how High Park trees go from sleeping skeletons to blossoming buds in the spring. Come away with some basic spring tree ID skills as well a new appreciation for trees.
