Family Nature Walks

      

Join the interpretive staff of the High Park Nature Centre and many special guests for this series of “wild” hikes on the trails of High Park! Explore a different natural history theme each week and create nature crafts that are fun for the whole family to make.  Strollers are difficult to use on the trails, so please bring an alternative.  NO PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!

Meet at: The High Park Nature Centre, 430 Parkside Dr. (Parkside Dr. & Indian Valley Cres.) unless otherwise specified

Ages: all ages are welcome—bring the whole family!

Suggested Donation: $2.00 donation per person in support of the Family Nature Walks program

Naturalists of Night “Star Party” in High Park

Meet at: High Park Nature Centre

 

Become a “naturalist of the night”! Join members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada to gaze at the night sky through a variety of telescopes – view constellations, double stars, the moon or spot a planet or two! Please bring a flashlight for the hike.

Night Songs

Meet at: High Park Nature Centre

 

Do you hear what I hear? Hike with the Nature Centre staff through wetlands, forests and savannahs while listening to the sounds of night. Mimic toads, owls and coyotes and figure out why a spring evening in High Park can be so noisy. This family-friendly hike includes some listening games. Please bring a flashlight.

Bat Night

Meet at: the benches across the road from the south side of the Grenadier Café in High Park

 

Learn about bats - how they communicate, what they eat and where they live from the real Batman – Dr. Brock Fenton! Learn about bat detectors and go on a hike to find bats in High Park!

Raccoon Hike

Meet at: High Park Nature Centre

 

Rediscover Toronto’s most underappreciated mammal: the Raccoon! This family-oriented walk will visit some important raccoon spots in High Park. To get in the mood, we will make our own raccoon eye masks.  Myths and amazing facts about these critters of the night will be discussed. Time for raccoon stories will be provided.

Life as a Squirrel

Meet at: High Park Nature Centre

 

Let’s get squirrely! Search in High Park for these furry acrobats and their signs. What do squirrels do all day? How big is a baby squirrel? Why do they act so funny? Come on our hike to learn more about these extraordinary urban mammals.

Journey Through the Past

Meet at: High Park Nature Centre

 

Travel through time - from the ice ages until the present – to explore how the culture, ecology, wildlife and geology of High Park are constantly changing. Visit the site of an ancient underground stream and hear amazing stories of the past.

 

August 6 @ 8-10 pm     

Moth Night with Toronto Entomologists Association

Meet at: the benches across the road from the south side of the Grenadier Café in High Park

 

Discover the “butterflies of the night” at the annual High Park Moth Night. Members of the Toronto Entomologists Association will set up special lights and show how to identify moths. A moth walk with family-friendly activities will be led by the High Park Nature Centre.

Please remember to bring your flashlights and insect collection boxes!

Fairy Hike

Do you believe in fairies?  Hike off to Fairyland to learn about different types of fairies and fairy lore. Search the trails of High Park for fairy food and building materials and then build your own fairy house!

A Delicious Hike

Meet at: High Park Nature Centre

 

Yum! Come discover the many wild foods in High Park on this fun and tasty walk through the woodlands.  Learn about plant identification, the considerations for wild food gathering in city parks and safety considerations.
