History of Dogs In High Park
Many of the old photographs of High Park show local residents and their canine companions enjoying the natural beauty of High Park.  In fact John Howard, the original owners of the park, produced many watercolours of life in and around High Park, which includes scenes of dogs and their masters enjoying the unspoiled beauty of High Park in the early 1900s.

A formal off-leash area was established sometime in the late 1980 on the western edge of High Park. Due to the City efforts at ecological restoration along the western edge of the park, an increase in crime along Spring road and the draw of dogs to a leaking hydrant near the Canstage site, Toronto City Council in 1996 moved the off-leash area to its current location.
